Born in South Carolina and raised in North Carolina, James Jenkins moved to Detroit in 1935. He retired from city employment in 1973 and founded the Graystone Jazz Museum in 1974. Originally located in the New Center Area, the museum moved to Downtown Detroit in 1991. The Graystone Jazz Museum is dedicated to the preservation of artifacts, instruments, oral histories, and other documentation of Jazz history.
